Poetic Challenge

Posted 9/5/2019

Taking this up was challenging

I took some time for starting

Thinking,  thinking

Then some more thinking

It turned out to be over thinking…

Finally I thought of at least trying

Face, yes there is a face

I can start writing about the face

Say a lot about eyes

Eye brows, lashes

Cheeks, cheek bones

Hair, chin, lips and nose

The way the eyes look

And the look in the eyes

What do eyes say

What does the face say

No not the skin of the face

But a bit underneath

There is an inside layer

Hidden there is another player

Who is emoting differently

Contradicting the visible layer

I cannot decide who is right

What is the truth

Is tThe visible one right

Or the one hidden behind

I had known in the beginning

This was going to be challenging

It's just a short poem connecting

Starting, trying and inevitably failing

Physiology philosophy

Posted 9/5/2019

beginning of life is a throb in the chest

rushing of blood through veins

that red liquid occupies the face

brain, tongue, throat and toes

heart pushes the blood with power and regularity

through miles of veins in the body

every tissue needs stuff carried by blood

may be oxygen or minerals

there is another substance being pushed through different channels in the body

which is not liquid

it is air

mixture of various gases

a little organ in the face pulls it in

through the inner pipes

to large lungs it is sent

in a very unlikely match

of air and liquid mix

energy rakes up

and the body wakes up

it looks around to do something

if something is wrong

it has to be fixed

after you come in

door must be shut

it has to be opened in order to go out

for shopping

things have to be carried back

light up the fire

the food cooked and eaten

to supply stuff to survive

soon yet another function comes up

on the forehead, gathers appear

the brows bend to meet in center

eyes start to squint

a hum is heard in voice

the head tilts to a side

this is start of inquiry
is this right?

could it be better?

can it be more beautiful?

more efficient

more appealing

could it better for me

for them

for everyone

could i make many of these

could i make everyone happy

happier...

Ganesh Chaturthi

Posted 9/2/2019

As per Hindu calendar, today is Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha, Bhadrapada month. This day is called as Ganesh Chaturthi (Anant Chaturthi in north), a very auspicious day in India, celebrating the most popular elephant god, Ganesh or Ganapati. In Maharashtra it is celebrated with a lot of gaiety and excitement. People bring a Ganesh idol home and establish it as a temple. Ganapati idol is brought for a pre-determined number of days; like one, one and a half, five, seven or ten days. Home owners inform all their friends to drop in to take a 'darshan' of Ganapati. Typically at a fixed time in the mornings and evening they have a Pooja and then 'Aarti' of the god.

Ganesh ji is associated with good omen when a new project is started. He is invoked when a new office, home, factory or even a new job starts. Many may say a silent prayer before starting on a journey too.

Most public Ganapatis are brought to a 'pandal', which is mostly erected over some public space. It may take 7-10 days to create or decorate such a closed space for the idol. The artistes do it very well, with moldings, lighting, speakers etc. On the day of arrival of idol everyone is most happy. They feel as though their most favorite relation has come over to stay. Children, ladies and older men participate most in these daily prayers… Time passes quickly. Ganapati has to leave. He has to be immersed in the sea in Mumbai or any other available water body in other places or cities.

There are a lot of activities during immersion too. As most public Ganapatis are kept for ten days. There is a large queue of trucks, cars etc, carrying the idols to the nearest beach. All blaring music, ringing bells, distributing 'prasad' to people on the way. There is also a huge deployment of police force all along the route and on the beach.

There are many young people who are expert in immersion. They offer their service at a price, depending upon the size of the idol or the shine of car they used. Over the years as public awareness grew, the material by which the idol is made has been improving. The courts had to step in, to check the affect on the marine life and quality of sea, due to huge  amount of foreign material being dumped into the sea. I believe now they now make 'eco-friendly' idols. Some of the idol this year can also be eaten by fish, they claim. This is very heartening.

Finally besides religion, holiness, fun and enjoyment, there is a fair amount of money to be made by the organizers, which is fine. This way the god keeps the wheel of good fortune turning year after year. We are allowed to have a new beginning every year.
